Disaster Management Precautions

 Disaster Management precautions are basically how we can be prepared before and during the disaster  resulting in less harm to the mankind. Some of the basic precautions during different Disasters are listed below:

1)EARTHQUAKES

Precautions:

1)Proper early warning system,

2)The information about earthquakes and their intensity should be shared with the public through radio, television and newspapers

3)Construction of buildings based on earthquake-resistant techniques

4)Construct buildings over pillars made of concrete and iron that are built deep in the ground

5)Water, ration, first-aid kits, radios, flash lights, battery, blankets, jackets and fire extinguishers should be stored  in safe places.

 

Measure on the personal front:

1)Remain calm

2)If inside a building or a house, take cover under a solid surface like a table, or stand in the doorway

3)If one is outside, move to an open space away from trees, electric poles and buildings

4)Switch off the gas and electric supply in the house during a quake and do not use elevators

5)After the quake is over, the affected people should be given immediate medical help

6)People should be vaccinated to stop epidemics from spreading

7)Transport and communication facilities should be restored as soon as possible

8)Police and paramilitary forces should be deployed to protect properties which had to be abandoned from theft.


2) FIRE DISASTERS

Precautions:

1)Not keep inflammable matter at home and always keep a fire extinguisher handy.

2)Remember to switch off all the electrical gadgets as well as the gas before going outside.

3)Keep match boxes out of reach of children and restrain smoking in the house.

4)Call the fire brigade immediately so that not a single moment is wasted.

5)Try to crawl because smoke is always less near the floor.


How to reduce chances of injury after a disaster
General safety tips

1)Wear sturdy shoes when entering a building or walking through debris after a disaster.

2)Carry a flashlight when entering dark buildings.

3)Do not enter a building if the foundation has shifted or has been weakened.

4)Do not demolish a building or house without professional help. Crews from the King County Dept. of Permitting and Environmental Review or licensed contractors can help you.

5)Buildings must be declared safe before they can be entered.
Heating equipment safely

6)If you smell gas, open all windows and doors. Do not use matches, candles, lighters, or turn on the stove. Sparks can ignite the gas and cause a fire or an explosion. Call the gas company from your neighbor's house.

7)If you suspect there is damage to the heating equipment, do not use it until a qualified service representative has checked it.

Electrical equipment safety

WARNING: Never use wet electrical appliances. They may cause an electric shock, overheat, or start a fire.
Do not touch any exposed cable or electrical wire.
